Can't outsource this

Can't outsource this

Are you a fan of outsourcing? I am.

Thanks to the magic of apps, I've outsourced grocery delivery, hailing cabs, and even dress shopping (LOVE Rent the Runway!).

I was also socialized to believe I SHOULD outsource certain aspects of my career. Someone else should:

  • Sing praise about how good I am, so I can politely deflect it and be loved even more for my self-effacing, non-threatening likability

  • Tell me exactly what to do next, without changing their minds about it, so I know how to be successful in my actions without fail

  • Create confidence and comfort for me to speak up and to engage with others so I can move forward in my career and make impact

Except it never worked.

Instead of being praised and recognized, I was told I needed to be more assertive in the workplace.

The higher-ups didn't notice the quality of my work. And they didn't realize on their own that I wanted - and deserved - to move up.

The certainty, comfort, and confidence I wanted from them never arrived.

It was beyond FRUSTRATING.

Why didn't it work?

Because we can't outsource self-belief.

Imagine the people whose help we want (bosses, mentors, future sponsors) were to do EXACTLY as we want them to do.

What would they be thinking about us?

Maybe they'd think:

  • She's valuable.

  • I trust she is the best person for X.

  • She's the secret weapon I need on my team.

What we want others to think about us is what we first need to believe about us.

And what we want others to do for us is what we first need to give to ourselves.

So what if you TRULY believed:

  • I am valuable.

  • I trust I am the best person for X.

  • I am the secret weapon I need on my team

What if you negotiated and led from a place of genuine self-belief and self-confidence?

Self-belief would enable you to step forward - no matter what was uncertain - with courage.

Self-confidence would enable you to advocate for yourself - not out of arrogance, but to communicate the value of you in a way that benefits the most people.

So what if you didn't outsource, but took responsibility for your self-belief?

You'd be unstoppable.

Rooting for you,
Jamie
